IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR SPRING '26
Spring 2026 State TA Grant important message per The Adjutant General of Virginia and Virginia Department of Military Affairs CFO Mr. Don Unmussig:
The Virginia National Guard State Tuition Assistance Program’s funding cap for Spring 2026 is set at up to $4,500, reduced from the previous semester’s $10,000 cap due to a surge in the program’s enrollment. Participation in the program nearly doubled after STAP returned to a grant model, and the adjusted cap is based on the funds remaining for the rest of the fiscal year.
The Virginia Department of Military Affairs manages the State Tuition Assistance Program, and schools bill DMA directly for each student instead of students having to pay up front and getting reimbursed. The Adjutant General of Virginia policy states the funding cap for each student is adjusted for each semester based on the availability of funds authorized by the Virginia General Assembly.
The cap will be reviewed for the Summer 2026 semester and is expected to stabilize moving forward.
